PES 08 was, well - disappointing to say the very least, and FIFA 09 is already a top seller in the current PS3 charts (full rundown coming soon). So, the spotlight is slowly moving to Pro 09 to rectify their cardinal failings from last year. They’ve got a lot of work to do, and in this article I’m going to fill you all in on the improvements, additions and details of Konami’s upcoming football bonanza (we hope).

First up, the graphics of PES 08 were the first to come under heavy fire by FIFA veterans as well as seasoned PESers hanging their heads in shame. The game was terribly laggy in online play and slowed down when running in HD (much like FIFA 08 online). here’s a full review of Pro 08.

One thing that has bothered players for years of PES playing, is the lack of licencing from clubs and international teams, meaning dodgy names and even dodgier kits. This time around, Konami have pulled their finger out and got licensing from Manchester United and Liverpool, so you’ll never walk alone without an ugly mug like Teves or Rooney by your side. Also, Konami have gone even further and signed a contract to secure the Champion’s League tournament for 4 whole years, meaning they can use every aspect of the European Tournament in the game’s simulation.

The graphics are getting a complete overhaul, and the game is (from demo gameplay impressions) looking every bit as realistic as FIFA 09, maybe even more realistic. PES has always been a favourite for realistic simulation and playability, and the AI in this installment looks to outdo that of an sports game on shelves at the moment.

“That is not to say that we are resting on our laurels, though. PES 2009 has a vast number of new additions that elevate it far beyond anything anyone else is doing.”

Spoken like a true Konami top dog! Lionel Messi has been confirmed to be the cover star of this year’s FIFA rival, bucking the trend of seeing the usual Ronaldinho/Rooney special we see every year.

Last, but not least, the game will be released on PS3, PC and 360 on October 17th, closely followed by a PSP and PS2 release. Sorry Wii players… you’ll have to wait until Spring 09 for the motion sensing footy fun. Oh and remember: a demo of PES 09 is available on the PSN Store! Order PES 09 below!
