Sony’s always had a thing about downsizing their games consoles, and that trend doesn’t look like it’s about to change. Earlier this year, Sony sold Toshiba the chip-production facilities they used to create the cell processor for $835 million. Now it has been confirmed that the duo are working on a 1/2 sized version of the original Cell, which is one of the world’s fastest domestic processors. This new, smaller chip will be cheaper to make and sell than the old 90nm and 65nm versions.
The new chip will begin production in 2009. The coolest thing is (I think) that it will require 40% less energy to run. This news may point to a future price cut on new PS3 models, and maybe even a cheaper slimline model.
BOOYAH!
