I just downloaded and installed PS3 Firmware v2.40, which arguably holds the biggest updates to the PS3’s OS. The largest and most sought after update is the In-game XMB which works surprisingly well. I was expecting a few bugs, such as freezing during playing online on a packed game.

The whole system runs really smoothly and integrates with the games well. I’m impressed. The other big addition is the Trophies feature, unfortunately I haven’t gained any trophies (as yet, you just wait) but when I do I’ll keep you updated. The trophies add a new dimension to the PS3 eperience and raise the bar for Online Gaming communities. You can argue that other consoles are more effective at online play, but we can now say that the PS3 has the best online gaming community! here’s how it works: trophies mean competition, competition means competitors, competitors mean community! It’s all good, people!

One maybe smaller feature added to the XMB is the time/date function. I find it immensely useful already, as I had a plan of downloading, installing, overviewing and reviewing for you guys. The clock let me keep track of time, otherwise I would still be reading the MGS4 Database.

Another little addition is the search feature. It is basically an extention of the browser, but gives you (much) quicker access to the web if you don’t know exactly what you’re going to do. It’s simply a shortcut to the Google search engine right there on your XMB.

No doubt in a couple of weeks, there will be requests on mods for the In-game XMB and videos galore of alleged ‘hacks’ but lets enjoy it while it’s fresh.

Pictures coming soon.
