I just had a brainwave. If the PlayStation 4 won’t have a disc drive, how will Blu-ray technology live past 2010? Blu-ray’s popularity is growing, but some are still reluctant to buy a player, due to the expense (why not buy a PlayStation 3).
We have to remember that Blu-ray is pretty recent technology and people are still getting used to it. I think the industry (tech/gaming) should give it a little time for the concept to sink in before basically making the format redundant. Maybe Blu-ray will be transferred to downloadable format, and will be able to be purchased from an iTunes style service online. that wouldn’t be too bad.
Actually, this has got me thinking. That would be quite a good idea, especially for rentals. Think about it. People rent games/movies for a nice night in, so the last thing they want to do is go out and drive around for a while, look for parking, go into BlockBuster or whatever and come out 20 minutes later with a movie (not of your first choice) and then go home, fall asleep and not watch the movie. LOL.
It would be pretty nice to be able to download rental of a movie or a game, and it just disappears from your hard drive a week later. That would be pretty cool. But still, It’s a bit soon (even in 2010) to start thinking about consoles without essential features like DVD playing.
What do you think? Should Sony, Microsoft etc. stick with a disc format?

I din’t relly think of that. But, lookingt at Sony’s history, the steps they’ve made (not only in gaming) have been HUGE, and certainly not half hearted, so I’m still kinda worried about it.
Hopefully they will keep a disc drive for backward compatibility. If the platform games aren’t a disc that’s find. But, I appreciate consolidation and so does my poor entertainment center.
