This is my preferred method of updating my PlayStation 3 System Software, because it means I can play games while I’m downloading the pretty large update on my PC. Much less intrusive, and I just thought you should all know.
What you need
Tutorial
Step 1
First, you need to connect your USB device to your PC and create a folder named ‘PS3 ‘ in the root directory. So it should look something like this: ‘F:\PS3′ . Then, inside the PS3 folder, create a folder named ‘UPDATE’ . This folder name MUST be in capital letters, otherwise this wont work.
Step 2
Now, head over to the official PlayStation 3 website and download the latest System Software Update (download here ). It will usually be about 130MB in size, unless it’s a major update. Download it straight to the UPDATE folder you just made: F:\PS3\UPDATE .
While it’s downloading, do something nice for yourself, like, ummm, subscribing to PlayStation Heads ???
Step 3
Once the download is finished, disconect the USB Device from your computer and connect it to one of the USB slots on your PlayStation 3 Console .
Step 4
Now, last step. Switch on your PS3 (If you haven’t already) and on the XMB , scroll sideways to ‘Settings’ , and then ‘System Update’ and select the option ‘Update via Storage Media’ . Then, just select the Device you have connected to the console and that’s it. Install away!
