Not going off topic too much I hope, but I have a very, very serious issue to discuss with you, the people today, on the subject of RSS, or should I say, not so RSS. Sorry - Bad, bad joke.
Back in 2005 5% of the Internet users said they were using RSS aggregators or XML readers to get the news and other information delivered from blogs and content-rich Web sites as it is posted online (according to the Pew Internet Project).
Feedburner recently reported that they track around 60 million RSS subscribers. Even if we bump that number to 70 million RSS users (counting people that use RSS with other applications or platforms) this would still convert to a meager 5,4% of the Internet users around the world, as of today.
What is the takeaway message? Only a very small percentage of the Internet population is aware of the RSS format and its benefits.
This is the reason I am participating in this program. I’m going to be promoting the event all throughout April (not too much mind you), and you can participate as well! If you want to take part, and yo have a website, you can write a post about RSS Awareness Day. If you don’t have a site, you can simply subscribe to some feeds, why not start with mine?

I think most blog readers have a vague sense of what RSS is because bloggers often reference it, but they don’t sign up because of inertia. I knew what an RSS feed was long before I finally jumped on the bandwagon, now I can’t imagine life without my Google Reader account.
