This is the first post in a series of the best selling Blu-Ray releases. It will be a monthly entry (so get used to it). I’l put in my views of the movies where I can.There will aso be a PS3 Charts series, pretty much the same as this one.Here goes.

First on the list is…

BeowulfBeowulf - £17.98I watched this one on the Big Screen, and I wasn’t disppointed, or impressed. It’s a little wierd, this film, but it must be number one for a reason. The reason is probably that it’s a new release. The storyline sticks to it’s roots, which is an old Norse (Viking) poem. The poem is apparently the oldest recorded piece of literature in England (if not the world), so I can’t blame the guys for trying.However. I was impressed at the stunning Computer generated visals, which far surpased my expectations. “The level of detail is now so high that a close-up of Beowulf reveals lines and pores in his skin, blemishes and individual facial hair and even the colour and complexity of the iris in his eyes,” wrote an ‘Amazon reviewer’.

I would say it’s worth the rent, just for the experience of the visuals, but don’t buy it unless you don’t get bored over really, really boring films.

7/10

Planet EarthPlanet Earth: Complete BBC Series - £39.98I was forced to watch some of these episodes at school, in Science classes. I admit that i never really enjoyed documentaries. But this one is definitely a must see. The cinematics and camera angles show the world as it should be seen in front of your eyes.Anyway. The display is outputted in 1080p HD, which lets us all see the marvels of our wide, wonderful and wierd planet in all it’s glory.

The UK release comes with a 5th disc for no extra cost, and the US release only incudes the main 4. That could be an incentive for Americans to wait for the UK release.

This series, I think it’s safe to say, has changed the face of documentaries as we know it.

This is one I would at least rent, and in my opinion it should be higher than Beowulf.

10/10

RatatouilleRatatouille - £14.32To be honest, I haven’t watched this, but I’ll trust the reviews, which all say that the storyline is meaningful, the extra features haven’t just been chucked together to keep customers happy, and it’s one for all the family.I’m just going to cut the drivel and give it a rating.

9/10 (based on Amazon Customer reviews)

I am LegendI Am Legend - £17.98This is a movie that definitely deserves to be higher on the list (maybe even number 1), but maybe it’s 4th because it’s currently only available for pre-order. The storyline was thought-provoking, but the author (Richard Matheson) of the book, and secondarily the director (Francis Lawrence) made it so without a trace. In short, the film was thought-provoking, but I don’t know why. That’s what amazed me about this film.The scenery of a deserted New York City creates an eery atmosphere, and the light, natural humour of Will Smith makes the movie one of the best. Speaking of Will Smith, this film just shows his capabilities. Being pretty much the only actor in a film that’s roughly 2 hours long. He did a great job and deserves more recognition.

10/10

Close EncountersClose Encounters Of The Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition) - £11.79For a 1977 title to be released on Blu-Ray in 2008, it must be a really good movie. It’s a Steven Spielberg movie, so quality can be excepted. I haven’t watched this one either, but here is the plot outline from IMDB.com:

Roy Neary sets out to investigate a power outage when his truck stalls and he is bathed in light from above. After this, strange visions and five musical notes keep running through his mind. Will he find the meaning of the visions, and who - or what - placed them in his mind ? Written by Colin Tinto {cst@imdb.com}

Sounds a pretty good deal to me. I’ll probably rent it, and maybe even post a full review.

8/10 (based on customer reviews)

So. That’s that. Hope you enjoyed it. Keep updated for any updates on things I’ve missed. As always, feel free to leave comments to correct me (the reader is always right).
